SY WHAT HARD WORK CAN DO!

Hap Suy Hardware founder Sy Kun started his journey to success in China. Staring out in the textile industry, the young Sy saw the potential of moving to the Philippines to make life better for himself and his family. Already a visionary, he aspired to become big in the retail industry.

In the Philippines, Sy started his business by peddling products using a wooden pushcart. These products ranged from common household tools like can opener and scissors to cleaning items like broom to hardware tools like hammer and pliers. Tirelessly, he navigated the streets of Downtown Manila focused on his objective of someday making it big.

Streets to Stores (Circa 1946): Freedom & Democracy

When the Philippines finally gained its independence from the United States of America, the difficult task of picking up the pieces and recuperating from the destruction caused by World War II began. Despite the state of the nation, however, Sy worked hard and remained focused on his objective. He seized the opportunity to insitutionalize his business by opening his first store at the corner of Ongpin and Gandara Streets in Binondo, which was the center of trade and business at the time. It was the perfect place to pursue Sy Kun’s vision of making it in the retail business. He named the store “Hap Suy”, which literally means “Combined Luck”.

Soon, Sy Kun took his business to the next level. By the 1960s, Hap Suy Hardware started importing products from all over the world. This early entry into the wholesale business catapulted the company to the top of the hardware industry. These milestones will forever be imprinted in the Philippine’s local hardware history.

Our Legacy

Sy Kun’s legacy continues to this day. Hap Suy Hardware Co. Inc., now managed by the third and fourth generation of the Sy family, remains on top of the game. The family’s extensive exposure and experience in the hardware industry has pushed them to live up to their mantra of continuously providing quality hardware products and solutions.

Hap Suy Hardware sets high ethical standards and values for the company and its directors, officers and employees. Honesty and integrity were the key values that Sy Kun established more than six decades ago, and those values remain and will forever be in the DNA of the Hap Suy Culture.
